Time Traveler's Wife

In attendance: Emilia, Laurel, Carmen & Stephanie.

Emilia and Laurel both read the book while Carmen and Stephanie had seen bits and pieces of the movie, actually enough for them to follow along with the discussion. Emilia and Laurel both agreed that they didn't understand what all the fuss was about. How have so many people "loved" this book. The idea was interesting but there were too many holes in logic. In the end, you either wanted to know more about what was happening in the future with individuals who had this genetic disorder (i.e., Henry's daughter) or you just wanted it over (i.e., Henry dead). Not something we would recommend to others. I would be interested in seeing how the movie portrayed the time traveling timeline, but there are many more movies on my list before I choose to see this one.

Book Club Recommendation: The Count of Monte Cristo

Here's the scoop: we all think everyone should read this book, but due to its long length, it seems a little too demanding to select for a club book. But, you should read it!

Synopsis: Falsely accused of treason, the young sailor Edmond Dantes is arrested on his wedding day and imprisoned in the island fortress of the Chateau d'If. Having endured years of incarceration, he stages a daring and dramatic escape and sets out to discover the fabulous treasure of Monte Cristo, and to catch up with his enemies. A novel of enormous tension and excitement, The Count of Monte Cristo is also a tale of obsession and revenge. Believing himself to be an 'Angel of Providence', Dantes pursues his vengeance to the bitter end, only then realizing that he himself is a victim of fate.

The Help

Last night we discussed The Help at Marie's house. Everyone agreed, this book is a must read! If we were ranking on a 5-star scale, I'm fairly confident that the group would have given it a 5-star review.

A Tree Grows in Brooklyn

Our premiere event! Our premiere book selection!

We all gathered at my house last night and discussed A Tree Grows in Brooklyn. We all agreed on a few things, but firstly, that it isn't a book you'd normally gravitate toward! I'd also go so far as to say that I would not recommend trying to speed read it (as I did)! The story is about a time when things just were a little (okay a lot!) slower-paced! No TV, no electricity, no Internet. It's about saving scraps of newspaper for taking to the butcher, and then pinching every penny possible.
